TUFF Week 10
A week after being pushed to the brink of their first defeat at
Sacramento yet withstanding to stay unbeaten, the Honolulu Islanders
had another repeat performance. Last week in the waning seconds
the Islanders made a late goalline stand, tripping up Vipers RB Tracy
Blass before he could score what would have been the game winning
TD for Sacramento. The Islanders held on and won to remain
undefeated at 9-0.

This week against a surprisingly tough Las Vegas High Rollers squad,
the Islanders again clung to a 20-16 lead later in the 4th Quarter. Las
Vegas put together what would be a 16 play 75 yard drive that would
come up 3 yards short. On 3rd and Goal from the Honolulu 1 yard
line, RB Matthew Ortiz was tripped up trying to reach the corner and
his High Rollers were forced to kick a field goal to close to within a
point with 6:23 left in the game. From there, Honolulu would extend
back out to a four point lead and Las Vegas would not threaten again.
The win keeps the Islanders unbeaten at 10-0.

In a TUFF Bowl XII rematch the Baltimore Battalion held off a 2nd
Half surge by the Chicago Skyline to avenge their championship loss,
37-20 in the Windy City. Baltimore jumped out to a 24-6 lead in the
2nd Quarter on three first half touchdown passes by QB Ken
Esposito, but Chicago’s QB Chad Oxford drew his team to within 24-
20 late in the 3rd Quarter. The Battalion closed the game well
however, as ILB August Mattawana iced the win with his second
interception of the game, returning one 60 yards for a TD late in the
4th Quarter.
Player of the Week:

QB Leo Birch   21-30        324 yards 4 TD
Miami Missiles

Miami had been struggling a bit since the famous Food Poisoning game where they
pounded the sickly Battalion. It appears that hangover is over, and QB Leo Birch led
the way to a similar laugher over the Monsoon. And Leo didn’t even play in the 2nd
Half.
Team of the Week:

San Diego Smoke
San Diego took a step in redeeming themselves for their awful start to the season. BC
had been sneaking up on a lot of teams, but the Smoke was ready for them and then
some.
Looking Ahead

Baltimore Battalion (8-2) @ Honolulu Islanders (10-0)
No question the game of the week. Baltimore has its ducks in a row after a brief two game losing streak a few weeks ago. Honolulu hasn’t suffered any such
letdown and seem focused on a special season.

Chicago Skyline (5-5) @ Miami Missiles (4-6)
Believe it or not, this one is for first place in the Central. Chicago won the first meeting just two weeks ago and can take a stranglehold on the division with a win.

Las Vegas High Rollers (3-7) @ Wisconsin Wreckers (6-4)
Wreckers have a prime opportunity to take command of the third spot in the conference playoffs.

In San Diego, the Smoke ownership faced a team from the market they just vacated
months ago, the surprising British Columbia Lynx. To the Smoke owner’s relief, the
Smoke played one of their best games of the season, thrashing the Lynx 36-13. Smoke QB
Tom Brickster threw for 399 yards and 2 TDs to put his team over the top, and San Diego
put together their most well-rounded performance of what has been thus far a very
disappointing season for them.

What happened to the Memphis Shock? S013 will be the first time that Memphis has not
won 10 games or more, as that fate was sealed with a 21-6 loss in Tennessee to the
Sacramento Vipers. Snakes QB Rodney White completed 22 of 28 passes for 390 yards
and 2 TDs while Memphis struggled to put points on the board once again. Shock RB
Flash Quentin had another big day with 163 yards on the ground, but he and his offense
was kept out of the endzone for the second straight week.

Elsewhere, Wisconsin beat New York 31-13 in an ugly one, sending the Vendetta to their
sixth consecutive loss. The Wreckers move to 6-4, the second best record in the
Continental Conference. Pittsburgh continued to dominate the league, beating Cleveland 25-
0 and Miami’s feast or famine regimen continued, on the upside this week, thrashing
Seattle 55-0.
