TUFF Week 11
TUFF’s two biggest heavyweights flexed their muscles in Week 11,
proving once again that they are the class of the league. First, the
undefeated Honolulu Islanders remained just that: the undefeated, by
humbling the Baltimore Battalion, 37-10. While the Islanders defense
suffocated the normally potent Battalion offense, limiting them to
only 286 net yards, it was a rarely used hero who led the way on the
offensive side. QB Mar Calixtro, who thus far in S013 has been
dusted off only to face their most difficult opponents, took the reins
today and threw for 446 yards and 3 TDs to put his Islanders up 34-
10 at the half.

Meanwhile, TUFF’s other heavyweight, the Pittsburgh Bulls, put in
another simply dominating effort, dominating both on offense and
defense, this time victimizing the British Columbia Lynx, 30-3. QB
Olin Fox came off the bench while Joe Monday rested, and the Bulls
offense hardly missed a beat. Fox completed 35 of 34 passes for
378 yards and 2 TDs.

In south Florida, the Chicago Skyline and Miami Missiles faced off
for the Central Division lead, and the defending TUFF champions
reasserted their lead over the Missiles, 34-18, powered by the arm of
QB Chad Oxford as usual. Oxford and the Skyline doubled up the
Missiles 24-12 in the 1st Half and coasted to a big divisional win,
taking a commanding two game lead in the division and claiming the
tiebreaker between the two teams.
Player of the Week:

CB Brian Blast        2 Int 6 Tackles
Memphis Shock
With perhaps any chance of the playoffs seemingly slipping away in Cleveland, Blast
saved the day with a key interception and set up his team’s winning score. That play
may just help turn the Shock’s season around.
Team of the Week:

Chicago Skyline

Chicago picked up their game at the right time and on the road in a very difficult
place to play. Just ask the Battalion and the Monsoon about their trips to Miami.
Looking Ahead

Pittsburgh Bulls (10-1) @ Baltimore Battalion (8-3)
A win for the Bulls would all but wrap up the Atlantic Division. Baltimore can get back into the divisional race if they can hold serve at home, however.

Cleveland Commandos (1-10) @ Memphis Shock (4-7)
Don’t be fooled by Cleveland’s record, they have been just a play away in a few of those losses, including this week against the Shock. The Commandos likely
would have had a better chance of winning won if they put QB Fred Kelly on the field.

Boston Attack (8-3) @ Wisconsin Wreckers (7-4)
About as even a matchup as either of these teams will get. Both teams will have to bring their A games to win. Boston rookie QB Dorell Chase has struggled a bit
on the road so far this season.

Staying in the Central, the Memphis Shock finally showed signs of life by mixing things up
on offense for the first time all season. The results still weren’t pretty, but the Shock had
just enough to pull off a 4th Quarter comeback over the host Cleveland Commandos, to
win 31-23. Cleveland led by a point late in the game and was driving, but an ill-advised
throw by Commandos QB Billy Jackson was picked off by Memphis CB Brian Blast and
return all the way to the Cleveland 7 yardline to set up Memphis’ come from behind win.
The win keeps the Shock very much alive in the playoff picture in the bottom heavy
Continental. These same two teams meet again next week in Memphis.

One of the few truly strong Continental squads, the Wisconsin Wreckers continued their
S013 success with a 26-23 home win over the Las Vegas High Rollers, but they too needed
a 4th Quarter comeback. Las Vegas led 23-16 and missed a very makeable 36 yard field
goal with 8:17 left. Wisconsin capitalized and tied the game on a scoring run by RB Rodney
Jackson and later claimed the victory with a last minute 34 yard field goal by K Stu
Hinokawa.

And finally, for the second time this season the Los Angeles Paladins choked away a
golden chance to beat the Seattle Monsoon. In Week 1, the Monsoon stole the game in the
final moments on a Hail Mary to TE Maurice Scardina. This week in LA, the Paladins held
a 20-10 3rd Quarter lead which they then squandered. Down 23-20 with less than 3
minutes left in regulation, Paladins S Justin Stahl stepped up, intercepting a Glenn Reaper
pass and returned it to the Monsoon 9 yardline. Needing only a field goal to tie or a
touchdown to win, Paladins RB Ken Simonton fumbled the ball away on the very next play
to give another gift to Seattle.
