TUFF Week 15
A couple of blasts from the past came back to life in Week 15 to help lead
their teams to victory, in a season that has seen their teams struggle like never
before.

RB Flash Quentin rushed 27 times for 162 yards to help pace the Memphis
Shock to a 36-10 win over the Los Angeles Paladins. Quentin today helped key
a Shock offense that has struggled all season to find any kind of rhythm at all.
Today, along with the help of QB Nattiel, Memphis found that rhythm. And
the defense was able to keep LA out of any kind of rhythm on their end. The
Shock defense held the Paladins to 172 yards of offense, 26 yards on the
ground, and held LA QB Ray Booher to 9 of 25 passing.

In San Diego, QB Tommy Brickster shook off a pair of first half interceptions
by passing for 533 yards and 4 touchdowns in a runaway 47-16 win over the
Seattle Monsoon. The Smoke also benefitted from a big game by veteran CB
Jack Draper who logged 7 tackles, 2 passes defenced, and 4 interceptions.

The Pittsburgh Bulls finally put an end to the Wisconsin Wreckers’ six game
winning streak. Wisconsin jumped out to a 14-0 1st Quarter lead, but five 2nd
Quarter field goals by Pittsburgh’s K Shad Dutschmann put the Bulls in front
15-14 at the half. QB Joe Monday had a 54 yard TD pass to RB-WR Tank
Smythe and Dutschmann added a couple more field goals and Pittsburgh held
on for a close 28-24 win in Wisconsin. Wreckers QB Howard Gatling
continued to put up huge numbers, but his 5 interceptions helped doom the
Wreckers to their first defeat in over a month.
Player of the Week:

RB Flash Quentin        27 rush 162 yards
Memphis Shock
The Flash we have grown accustomed to seeing for so many seasons in Tennessee.
He didn’t find the endzone, but his (and his line’s) play set the tone for the game and
LA never stood a chance. Too bad the Shock didn’t turn the offense over to him
much sooner in the season.
Team of the Week:

San Diego Smoke
The Smoke won’t sniff the postseason this time around, but they took care of
another of their rivals today with a great effort from QB Tommy Brickster and the
offense. The defense may have allowed 409 yards, but more than made up for it by
forcing five turnovers by the Monsoon.
Looking Ahead
Wisconsin Wreckers (10-5) @ British Columbia Lynx (8-7)
Both teams will make the playoffs as wild cards, and if they can both somehow pull off upset wins on the road
in the first round, they could conceivably vie for the conference title.

Boston Attack (10-5) @ Pittsburgh Bulls (14-1)
Expect this one to be nothing but a glorified preseason game as the teams are locked in for a first round match a
week later. Does anybody else expect vanilla and more vanilla in this one?

Miami Missiles (6-9) @ Memphis Shock (5-10)
Still hard to believe that the Shock’s season will end earlier than a conference title game. Just doesn’t seem right.

Cleveland Commandos (3-12) @ Seattle Monsoon (5-10)
A sad day around TUFF as the well-liked Cleveland ownership most likely will be taking part in its last TUFF
game.
Archives
British Columbia got a taste of what is in store for the Lynx in Round 1 of the
upcoming Continental playoffs, and they may have bitten off much more than they
can chew. QB Mars Calixtro and the Honolulu Islanders put an end to their brief
two game losing streak by walloping the Lynx 41-10. Calixtro threw 4 TD passes,
with 3 going to WR Desmond Phoenix.

The Baltimore Battalion also set a tone for their forthcoming first round United
matchup with the Sacramento Vipers, beating the Snakes 27-13. Baltimore
benefited from an early 1st Quarter Sacramento fumble at the Baltimore 4 yardline,
and a late 4th Quarter interception return for a game sealing touchdown by
Steinmetz when the score was 20-13. QB Josh McKnight made another impressive
start for the Battalion while starting QB Ken Esposito rests for the postseason.

In what was the best game of the week’s slate, the Chicago Skyline held off the
Cleveland Commandos, 44-37. The maligned Skyline defense made a late goalline
stand with under two minutes remaining in regulation, stopping Cleveland RB
Lowe from the Chicago 1 and 2 on 3rd and 4th Down with the Commandos
seeking the tying score. Chicago RB Axl Ricci scored on three touchdown rushes
of his own in the contest.

Finally in Miami, the Missiles outlasted the visiting Las Vegas High Rollers 18-13 in
a tight defensive battle. Neither team could muster much offense, but Miami
intercepted Vegas QB Billy Sandstorm inside Missile territory in the game’s final
moments to seal Miami’s sixth win of the season.
