TUFF Week 9
With the ball on the Honolulu 3 yardline, Sacramento QB Rodney White
spiked the ball to stop the clock at 0:04 remaining in the game, his Vipers
trailing the undefeated Islanders 26-22. With only one chance to win left in
hand, the Vipers banked on RB Tracy Blass. The play called for a sweep to
the left side where Blass found the corner around the end and stretched for
the goalline. But there Islanders OLB Max Montgomery dragged Blass to
the ground, with the ball just shy of the goal, and with the clock showing
nothing but zeroes. Blass and the Vipers could only let out shake their heads
at coming so close, yet still short to knocking off the still unbeaten
Islanders. Honolulu runs their record to a perfect 9-0, the only unbeaten left
in all of TUFF. A missed extra point by Sacramento K Milan Kaui in the
2nd Quarter came back to haunt the Vipers as they trailed by 4 in the final
moments.
Honolulu’s closest competitors in the West faced off in a thriller in
Wisconsin. The BC Lynx held a 28-24 lead with just over two minutes to
go in the contest. On a critical make or break 4th and 7 from the BC 19
yardline, Wreckers QB Howard Gatling fired a 19 yard strike to WR Terry
McCord for what would be the winning score. The Wreckers with their 34-
28 win, climbed into a 5-4 second place tie with the Lynx behind the
Islanders.
Player of the Week:
QB Howard Gatling 28-46 459 yards 4 TD
Wisconsin Wreckers
The choice this week came down to Gatling or Pittsburgh QB Joe Monday. Monday
put up the bigger numbers, but Gatling’s gutsy throw on a gigantic 4th Down play
vaulted his team over British Columbia in a game that could ultimately mean a playoff
spot in the Continental.
Team of the Week:
Honolulu Islanders
For the first time in a while, the Islanders didn’t blow out their opponent. Still coming
up with a huge road win over another championship contender in a close game shows
that this team might have it in them to win it all.

Looking Ahead
British Columbia Lynx (5-4) @ San Diego Smoke (2-7)
The current Smoke owner just pulled the plug on a Timber franchise that was just beginning to take hold in BC. Now the current BC franchise gets to take a
swing at his current team. If only the schedule makers put this matchup in Vancouver, things could have been potentially ugly.
Baltimore Battalion (7-2) @ Chicago Skyline (5-4)
A rematch of last season’s classic TUFF Bowl, the Battalion must surely have revenge on their minds. Chicago seems to have righted the ship but faces a huge
test in a suddenly beatable Baltimore.
Sacramento Vipers (6-3) @ Memphis Shock (3-6)
Memphis needs to get things under control as they suffer through their worst season in their history. The Vipers aren’t an easy team to get things under control
against.

In Chicago, the Skyline may have taken command of the Central division. A big second half put away
the visiting Miami Missiles and helped to extend the Skyline’s win streak to three games and their lead in
the division to two games. QB Chad Oxford had another huge day throwing the ball for 478 yards and 3
TDs, and this time Chicago avoided the costly turnovers and flimsy defense that had been plaguing the
team earlier in the season. By virtue of a tough loss at home to Las Vegas, the Memphis Shock
continued their slide in S013, slipping back two games behind Chicago. Shock RB Flash Quentin carried
18 times for 128 yards, but the Shock were kept out of the endzone in their 17-9 loss.
The Baltimore Battalion, carrying a rare two game losing streak, struggled mightily again this week, but
this time had just enough to defeat the New York Vendetta, 10-6. The Battalion held New York to only
131 yards of net offense, but with only five minutes remaining in the 4th Quarter and a 10-3 lead,
Baltimore made a huge defensive stand inside their own 5 to prevent the Vendetta from tying the score.
New York was forced to settle for a field goal and never threatened again.
The San Diego Smoke didn’t have enough to overcome QB Tommy Brickster’s 3 interceptions against
their Southern Californian rivals, the Los Angeles Paladins. LA RB Lamar Potts provided the running
game with 105 yards on the ground, including a 66 yard touchdown run that put the Paladins on top for
good in the 2nd Quarter.
Finally, the Pitt Bulls faced a stiff challenge from the Seattle Monsoon, and clung to a slim 36-34 lead
early in the 4th Quarter, but the Pitt Bulls closed strong, pulling away from the Monsoon. Pittsburgh QB
Joe Monday continued his stellar play in S013, passing for 504 yards with 4 TDs and 1 Int.
