TUFF Week 2 Roundup
Only a week after a handful of close games to open the S013 season,
the second week offered very little drama. Only one of the eight games
in TUFF this week featured a margin of victory that was less than ten
points, with Miami defeating Cleveland, 29-20.
For the second week in a row, the Commandos fell behind early before
rallying to tie the game in its latter stages, only to fall in defeat. This
week, the Missiles jumped in front 20-10 in the first half before seeing
Commando QB Billy Jackson knot the score with a 17 yard pass to WR
Ben Doering. But in the 4th Quarter, Miami regained the momentum
and the lead on the arm of QB Chris Steel and the leg of K Tom
Anderson.
The rest of the weekend’s matchups saw largely one-sided contests that allowed many of
the spectators to get an early jump on traffic. What might have been billed as the game of
the week beforehand saw the Chicago Skyline travel to face the Honolulu Islanders. This
week, the Skyline once again demonstrated how deserving of MVP honors QB Chad
Oxford is. Unfortunately they demonstrated his value with him dressed in street clothes,
out with an injury suffered last week. Rookie QB Leo Champagne started in his place, but
after an early lead, the rookie struggled mightily and was forced to watch Honolulu QB
Mars Calixtro dominate the game and the Skyline with it, 47-17.
QB Ken Esposito and his Baltimore Battalion crushed the New York Vendetta, 38-10 in the
Big Apple. Baltimore again made things look far too easy. The Vendetta didn’t help their
cause by turning the ball over 5 times in the game. The Memphis Shock rebounded from
their disappointing defeat in their opener by beating down the Wisconsin Wreckers, 37-20.
Ancient QB Zoltan Zephyr threw for 383 yards and 4 TDs.
Elsewhere, the Pitt Bulls served notice that they are a force to be reckoned with an
impressive effort at Sacramento. QB Joe Monday looked refreshed, hitting on 19 of 29
passes for 278 yards and 3 TDs. Also, the United Pacific could prove interesting in S013.
The LA Paladins disappointed again this week, falling to the BC Lynx while the Seattle
Monsoon jumped all over Las Vegas.
Player of the Week:
TE Maurice Scardina 6 catches 119 yards 2 TD
Seattle Monsoon
Last week he made one of the more memorable plays in TUFF history, scoring on a desperation toss to
beat the Paladins. This week he dominated from the beginning, wreaking havoc through the High Rollers
defense, finding the endzone twice.
Team of the Week:
Pitt Bulls
Other teams may have been more dominant, but fewer teams faced a more difficult test. The defense
was excellent in limiting Sacramento QB Rodney White and the Viper offense to 14 points, while the
Bulls offense was efficient.
Looking Ahead
Miami Missiles (1-1) @ Los Angeles Paladins (0-2)
The Los Angeles Paladins find themselves in an early hole after two tough losses in the first two weeks. They will get their chance to get back on
track but the Miami Missiles won’t be any easy team to beat.
