TUFF Week 3
A week after behind relatively held in check by the Pitt Bulls, Sacramento QB
Rodney White put to rest any doubts about what he and the Vipers are capable of
in S013. Facing a surprising Seattle Monsoon club, White and the Viper offense
were nothing short of deadly. White completed 26 of 32 passes for 486 yards and
5 TDs. Three of those touchdowns came in the first half to stake his team to a
commanding 27-7 halftime lead. The Monsoon never challenged from there.
In Baltimore, the Battalion got a good contest from the Las Vegas High Rollers. In
fact it was the visiting High Rollers who led 16-13 after three quarters. But from
there, QB Ken Esposito took over in the 4th Quarter. He hit WR Dale Hawstone
from 10 yards out to put the Battalion in front, 20-16 and later WR Jeremy
Crawford to seal the 27-19 victory. In typical Esposito fashion, the Baltimore
quarterback threw for 356 yards and 3 scores.
For the defending champion Chicago Skyline and QB Chad Oxford, things didn’t quite go
as well. After losing last week in Honolulu with their quarterback sidelined with an injury,
Oxford wasn’t about to sit out against the Memphis Shock even though he was expected
to miss at least another week of action. Oxford however clearly wasn’t close to 100% as
he completed only 25 of 54 passes for 1 TD and 3 Ints. He was also sacked 9 times by the
Shock defense in a 26-10 loss.
In San Diego, the Wisconsin Wreckers took away their first win of the season despite
gaining only 8 first downs and 210 yards in the game. Trailing 9-0 in the 3rd Quarter, WIS
QB Howard Gatling hooked up with WR Terry McCord on a 62 yard touchdown pass to
cut into the deficit. Wreckers K Stu Hinokawa gave the visitors a 13-9 lead in the 4th with
a pair of field goals, but Wisconsin needed a late defensive stand deep in their territory,
denying San Diego QB Frank Luckey and the Smoke their first win.
More disappointment reigned in southern California, where the LA Paladins sank to 0-3
against the Miami Missiles. The Paladins led 13-10 but Miami QB Chris Steel fired a 13
yard strike to RB Moose Edmonds to put the Missiles on top in the 4th Quarter on the way
to a 20-13 win. Miami overcame 3 turnovers by limiting Los Angeles to 245 net yards of
offense.
Player of the Week:
QB Ken Esposito 23-48 356 yards 3 TDs
Baltimore Battalion
As far as Esposito’s numbers go, this week was nothing out of the
ordinary, which is a testament to his ability and the consistency of
his team. But what stood out was his ability to rally his team to a
4th Quarter comeback. His ability in the clutch has been the one
thing criticized, perhaps unfairly by the media, and perhaps more
games like this will silence his critics.
Team of the Week:
Boston Attack
Boston made a bold move turning to a rookie at quarterback
hoping to keep mistakes to a minimum. The defense frustrated the
red hot QB Joe Monday and the Pitt Bulls, and QB Dorell Chase
made Pittsburgh pay for their mistakes in a game the Attack
needed badly.
Looking Ahead
San Diego Smoke (0-3) @ New York Vendetta (2-1)
Vendetta has a golden opportunity to extend their winning ways against a Smoke team that is struggling to find their identity.
Chicago Skyline (1-2) @ Pittsburgh Bulls (2-1)
For an early season game, this one has all the makings of a turning point game for both teams. Skyline can’t afford to fall too far behind Memphis
while Pittsburgh could make a huge statement with a win over the champs.
