TUFF Week 5
Luckily for fans around the league, TUFF wasn’t riddled with
as many blowouts in Week 5 as it had been in recent weeks.
Of course there had to be a few, as Chicago took out their
frustrations on hapless Cleveland, 45-10 and Sacramento
exposed New York 37-7.
The Pittsburgh Bulls have looked scary good so far in S013,
with a dominant defense and an opportunistic offense headed
by a perhaps resurgent QB Joe Monday, and they proved both
of these qualities in a 27-7 drubbing of the Los Angeles
Paladins. The Pitt Bulls defense held LA to six first downs for
the game. The Paladins’ lone points of the game came on a
100 yard interception return by CB Vernon Amerson. His 100
yard return nearly matched the total yardage gained by the LA
offense, who netted 125 yards total.
In Seattle, ageless QB Tommy Brickster returned to his
rightful place at the helm of the San Diego Smoke. Brickster
threw for 330 yards and a pair of touchdowns but he was
intercepted twice by the Monsoon, one of which was
returned for a TD by Seattle CB Milton Staab. Even with
Brickster back in command, San Diego was still unable to
come up with their first win of S013, falling to Seattle, 24-19.
Coming off a pair of road wins, the Wisconsin Wreckers returned home with a tough task ahead of them in
the unbeaten Honolulu Islanders. The Wreckers proved nearly up to the task, generating 513 yards of total
offense, but Wisconsin QB Howard Gatling threw three costly interceptions, two of them from within the
Islanders’ 11 yardline. Honolulu rookie QB Daniel Olson led the Islanders to the win, 20-6 with a pair of
touchdown passes.
In the heat of Miami, the Memphis Shock erased a 23-10 halftime deficit, claiming a 27-23 lead late when QB
Zoltan Zephyr hit WR Howard Camarillo from 18 yards out with only 1:19 left in the 4th Quarter. Still,
Missiles QB Chris Steel had a chance to pull off a comeback of his own but his errant pass was intercepted
by CB Brian Blast at the Shock 14 yardline with 0:22 left in the game, sealing the win for Memphis. Steel
threw 5 interceptions in the game, two were returned for scores, one by Blast in the 1st Quarter, and later by
LB David Yoon in the 3rd Quarter to begin the comeback for the Shock.
Finally, up in Canada, the British Columbia Lynx remain one of the bigger surprises of the young S013
season. The Lynx trailed the Las Vegas High Rollers16-6 after three quarters but rallied to tie the game in the
4th Quarter when QB Justin Rivera hit WR Mark Chambliss on a 7 yard pass for a touchdown. But then the
High Rollers answered, setting up for a 30 yard field goal attempt with only 0:09 left on the clock. There BC
DE George Blanc reached high and blocked what should have been the winning field goal for Las Vegas. In
overtime, Lynx K Deangelo Castera connected on a 43 yard field goal for a 19-16 win for BC, and a 3-2
record
Player of the Week:
DE George Blanc 6 tkl, 1 hurry, 1 forced fumble
British Columbia Lynx
Blanc’s block of Las Vegas’ would-be winning field goal saved the day for the
surprising Lynx.
Team of the Week:
Chicago Skyline
If they lost again this week, all hell would be breaking loose right now in the
Windy City. One week does not make a season, but the Skyline have to be hoping
that this win rights the ship.
Looking Ahead
Pittsburgh Bulls (4-1) @ Memphis Shock (3-2)
Shock came up with a big comeback win at Miami, but they won’t be able to afford to fall behind a defense like the Bulls'. No matter what, this classic matchup
should be a great one as always.
Miami Missiles (2-3) @ Wisconsin Wreckers (2-3)
Both teams suffered tough defeats in Week 5, but a win next week would go a long way later when the playoff stretch gets going. A loss wouldn’t be so good.
Los Angeles Paladins (0-5) @ Baltimore Battalion (5-0)
Last season’s United Conference Championship combatants couldn’t look like a bigger mismatch thus far in S013.
