TUFF Week 7
With the usual standard of excellence and the recent undefeated
season, a great deal of the deserved media focus has been
squarely on the Baltimore Battalion. And coming off a literally
sickening performance a week ago in Miami where they suffered
their first loss in 27 regular season game, everyone was
wondering about how the Battalion would react heading into a
huge game in Pittsburgh. Perhaps now after another dominating
Pitt Bulls performance in a 40-20 thrashing of the Battalion, some
of the focus should now be fixed on these remarkable Pitt Bulls.
The Bulls led 20-17 at halftime then dominated the 2nd Half. The
dominant Pittsburgh defense shut down the vaunted Baltimore
offense and Bulls QB Joe Monday was nothing short of
spectacular, stepping up his play from the normal very good level.
Monday completed 27 of 40 passes for 420 yards, 3 TD, 1 Int,
and a rushing TD as well. The Pitt Bulls defense forced four
turnovers and limited the Battalion to only 10 first downs and
17:50 time of possession. For the season Pittsburgh has allowed
only 10.3 points per game and just over 250 yards per game
defensively. Most importantly, the Pitt Bulls with their 7-1 record
take sole possession of first place in the United.
Player of the Week:
OLB Johnny Justice 11 tkl 2 Def 4 Stf 2 Hur 1 FF 2 Int
Seattle Monsoon
With so many players deserving the recognition, it’s hard to choose just one. But
OLB Johnny Justice was all over the field making play after play for the Monsoon in
a tight battle in New York.
Team of the Week:
Cleveland Commandos
Other teams may have been more impressive but Cleveland showed the most heart
and deserved to earn their first win of the season against a tough Wrecker squad.
Looking Ahead
Miami Missiles (3-5) @ Chicago Skyline (4-4)
All of a sudden things are looking better in the Windy City. A .500 record has them alone in first place, but a very strong Missile team, and not to mention
Memphis, are just a game behind.
British Columbia Lynx (5-3) @ Wisconsin Wreckers (4-4)
Don’t look now, but the Lynx have the second best record in the Continental. Two of S013’s biggest stories meet for the first time this season.
Honolulu Islanders (8-0) @ Sacramento Vipers (6-2)
This week’s marquee matchup could be a possible TUFF Bowl preview. The Islanders look like the class of the league to this point, and Sacramento doesn’t look
like they are too far behind.
Archives
Not far away, the Cleveland Commandos, who have been struggling through the first
half of S013 winless to date, suffering periodic meltdowns to doom them to hard-to-
swallow losses, finally put together something close enough to a complete game to
break into the win column. The Commandos jumped to a 17-3 first half lead against the
Wisconsin Wreckers before allowing the Wreckers to take the lead 24-17 early in the
4th Quarter. But in an un-Cleveland-like way, the Commandos climbed back to tie with
under 3 minutes to go on RB Johnny Lowe’s second TD of the game, and then added
the go ahead field goal with just over a minute remaining. Wisconsin missed a
desperation 53 yard field goal that would have tied things up with 0:07 on the clock.
In New York, the Vendetta imploded in the 2nd Half after leading 23-7 early in the 3rd
Quarter. In under three minutes the Vendetta saw the Seattle Monsoon erase that lead
with a 55 yard TD pass, a 65 yard interception return for a TD, and a 69 yard blocked
punt returned for a TD. Seattle would prevail 31-29.
In Vancouver, the British Columbia Lynx continued their surprising success with a 15-
10 win over the perennial powerhouse Memphis Shock. BC held the Shock in check and
took the lead for good late in the 4th Quarter when RB Harold Lassiter busted into the
endzone from 4 yards out. Memphis RB Flash Quentin carried 40 times for 157 yards
and 1 TD in the loss.
