Pitt Bulls pull it out Last minute field goal for Dawgs dooms Boston in first round, 26-23

Pittsburgh, PA – With 13 second remaining in regulation of the 1st Round matchup between the Boston Attack and host
Pittsburgh Bulls, Bulls K Shad Dutschmann coolly lined up and drilled a 41 yard field goal to break a 23-23 tie and to send
the Pitt Bulls on next week to host the S013 United Conference Championship against the Baltimore Battalion.
Dutschmann’s kick was clutch, but the play of his quarterback, Joe Monday, was his equal. With Boston just having tied the
score at 23 with 2:33 left in the 4th Quarter, Monday set to work from the Pitt Bulls 25 yardline. About a minute later the
Bulls faced a 3rd and 9 from their own 34. Having just missed TE Jason Zink on a post pattern the play before, Monday
looked back to the big tight end and hit him on a slant, resulting in a 16 yard gain and a huge conversion for a first down at
the midfield stripe.
A first down later, with the ball on the Boston 36 and with just over a half minute on the gameclock, Monday once again
looked to Zink and found him on a 12 yard pickup down to the Attack 24 yardline with only a baker’s dozen left in the
game. From there he left it to K Dutschmann to put the Attack away and to send the Pitt Bulls on to play another day with a
26-23 playoff opening win.
The first half for the two teams started out slowly. The Pitt Bulls dominated play through the first two quarters, moving the
football on offense and frustrating Boston’s with some dominating play on defense. Still, Pittsburgh held only a 9-6
advantage on the scoreboard at the halftime break. Pittsburgh broke inside the Boston 10 yardline on four different occasions
in the first half, but was forced to settle for three field goals and Monday threw an interception from the 2 on another
chance. That kept the game close after two periods.
Early in the 3rd Quarter, Boston K Wally Attia tied the score at 9-9 with his third field goal of the contest, but later in the
quarter, the Pitt Bulls broke through when QB Joe Monday scored on a naked bootleg from the Boston 1 to put the home
team in front 16-9.
The Attack answered right back however, as early in the 4th Quarter, rookie QB Dorrell Chase found TE Chris Edward
from 6 yards out to tie the game again at 16-16. Boston converted a fourth down at the Pittsburgh 30 earlier in the drive to
keep that drive alive.
But Pittsburgh had an answer for that, a 15 play, 80 yard drive that was topped off with a 5 yard touchdown from Joe
Monday to TE Jason Zink. Still Boston had a response for them. Chase hit fellow rookie, WR Larry Bennett on a 60 yard
pass to set up a later 13 yard scoring throw to WR Willie Guido to knot things up at 23 with 2:33 on the clock.
From there, Monday and Dutschmann worked their magic to finally shut the door on the season for Boston. Monday threw
for 427 yards on 35 for 51 passing, with 1 TD passing and another running, though he did throw 3 interceptions. RB
Granville Bashline starred for the Attack in a losing effort, rushing for 116 yards on 15 carries and collecting 4 catches in the
passing game.
Boston head coach Cal Upshock after the game, “We have nothing to be ashamed of, to hold our heads down about. We
played a good strong game today, and so did Pittsburgh, they just were a little bit better, and we should congratulate them on
a well-earned, hard fought win. But our guys should be proud too, we made some big stands on defense, and our offense
responded when they had to. Take this game as a building block for the future.”
Next week Pittsurgh will play host to the Baltimore Battalion for the right to represent the United in TUFF Bowl XIII.
